Early flowering plants
Spring atmosphere for your home
Are you longing for the first signs of spring?
Discover the enchanting early-flowering miniature bulbs and learn how you can enjoy their delicate flowers on your balcony or in your home. Here you can find out which plants are early bloomers and when you can plant them at home.
What are early bloomers?
If you go for a walk in February, you might discover small green leaves among the snow or bare meadows. These are the first early bloomers making their way! These special plants open the spring season and show off their colorful flowers as early as March. Early bloomers are not only suitable for outdoors, but also for the balcony or the house. You can place miniature bulbs as decoration on tables or consoles to admire their flowers up close. Even plants such as snowdrops or winter aconites can be stylishly presented in terracotta pots with moss cushions.
When should you plant early-flowering bulbs?
Plant the bulbs every fall in the garden or in pots so that they sprout in time in spring. Make sure that the plants are protected from frost in winter. As a rule of thumb, flower bulbs should be planted twice as deep as they are tall. They can be planted closer together in pots than in the open ground.
How to plant early bloomers in pots
Think about which potting soil you want to use. Many bulbs originate from areas with boulders and rocky slopes, such as the Mediterranean, Turkey or Central Asia. Give your bulbs a well-drained soil mixture of loamy compost and planting clay, lava gravel or mineral sand (two parts compost to one part gravel). Follow the planting depth recommendations for the different types of bulbs.
Getting early bloomers to flower again
Once you have planted, you only need to water occasionally and wait. By January or February at the latest, you will see the first green tips. When crocus, bluestem & co. have faded, you can leave the bulbs in the pot or put them outside after the first flowering so that they can continue to spread.
With these instructions, you can bring a bit of spring into your home and bridge the time until the real start of spring with cheerful flower colors.
Early bloomers - decoration & care tips
Imagine the first warm rays of sunshine falling through your window and dancing on a lovingly arranged collection of early bloomers. As an interior designer, I would like to show you how you can turn your home into a springtime retreat with simple means.
Crocuses and bluestem - These delicate heralds of spring are perfect for small pots on your windowsill. Plant them close together in a mixture of potting soil and sand to encourage drainage. Crocuses and bluestem need very little water to develop their bright flowers.
Tulips and star hyacinths - A classic that never goes out of fashion are tulips, which you can combine wonderfully with the bright blue star hyacinths. Choose soft pastel shades for a calming effect or bold colors to set accents. Both types of plants need a little more water than crocuses, so make sure the soil stays moist but avoid waterlogging.
Snowdrops and blue cushions - Snowdrops, which often symbolize the very first hint of spring, are perfect to combine with the ground-covering blue cushion. Place them in small groups in low pots and combine them with moss to simulate a woodland scene. Both prefer cool, moist conditions, so keep the soil evenly moist.
The Caucasian memorial my rtleand winter jasmine - For a touch of the exotic, the Caucasian memorial myrtle with its melancholy blue tones is ideal for shadier areas. Alongside this, winter jasmine is great as it is hardy enough to thrive in sparser corners of your garden.
Winterballand saltwort - Winterball, with its pink or white flowers, and the bee-friendly saltwort are fantastic early bloomers for sunny locations. Not only do they provide a splendor in the garden, but they also support the local fauna.
By bringing these diverse early bloomers together in your space, you can create an oasis of calm and new life. Let nature inspire you and bring its freshness and growth into every corner of your home.
